On the grounds of his enormous estate, Charles
Spencer has opened a shrine, museum and souvenir shop in
memory of his older sister.
His sister is Princess Diana, a woman who
was an obsession for British people during her lifetime
and is continuing to be an obsession long after her death.
The British newspapers have criticised the
project for its lack of taste calling it "vulgar"
and "tacky" and have criticized Spencer for making
money out of his sister's tragic death; visitors pay 10
pounds to enter and, because of the demand, have to book
in advance.
Diana's grave is on a small, wooded island
which people are not allowed to visit.
Instead, they pay their respects at a yellow
shrine facing the island.
Here they can leave candles and flowers
before entering the former stables which has been converted
into a Diana museum.
It features Diana's childhood, her royal
wedding, her travels and charity work.
However, most of all, it is about her jewelry
and clothes.
There is the famous wedding dress and mannequins
wearing 28 of her favourite outfits.
After the museum, visitors can go to the
gift shop where they can buy Diana cups, Diana notebooks,
and framed quotations of Diana's and from Elton John's song
Candle in the Wind.
Although Earl Spencer denies that he is
making a profit out of the museum, it is obviously a lucrative
business which will pay a large part of the expenses of
the running of his enormous country estate.
