Are you a team player or would you rather
work alone?
Do you put yourself or others first?
A lot of Japanese often debate the pros
and cons of western-style individualism.
A lot of them are strongly drawn to it,
but at the same time they know it can be a negative or dangerous
thing.
Those in favour of individualism say that
it frees the mind and spirit, allowing individuals to question
the established ways of doing things.
This leads to change and invention, resulting
in the kind of creativity that explains the number of Nobel
Prize winners in the U.S. and Britain.
These countries are well known for their
eccentrics and non-conventional types of people.
Individualism helps people to express their
thoughts and feelings, helping them to think for themselves
and to solve problems.
It also helps them to become mature adults.
People against individualism say that it
is responsible for a lot of the social problems that are
developing in the West.
They say that people are becoming undisciplined
and that there is a loss of community and family values.
