If the asteroid, which is more than a kilometer
wide, hit the Earth, an enormous amount of soil and dust
would be sent into the atmosphere.
This would block out sunlight and result
in a cosmic winter, which could last for years.
If it landed in one of the oceans, it would
result in tidal waves which would destroy coastal regions
in that part of the world.
However, although there would be a lot of
suffering, it is unlikely that it is big enough to cause
the extinction of humans and other animal species.
However, there are many good reasons for
not taking end of the world predictions too seriously.
In 1844 an American prophet gathered 50,000
followers together, predicting that the world would end
on October 22nd.
Marie Gabriel, a nun from Poland, predicted
that the world would end on July 16, 1994, and an Irish
priest said that the world would end in 1996.
As so many people have been wrong in the
past, maybe we shouldn't be too afraid this time!
