In the 20th century, a great deal of damage
has been done to the environment.
In the 1970s and 1980s, pressure groups
called green groups began to publicize their fears.
Some governments reacted to public concern
by introducing policies to limit pollution and other forms
of destruction.
One of the most damaging types of pollution
is "acid rain".
This is formed when chemicals from industries
and vehicle exhaust mix with clouds to pollute the rain.
Acid rain kills trees and poisons plants
and animals.
Spillage from oil tankers, nuclear power
plants and chemical factories has done terrible damage to
the environment.
Gases found in aerosols, glues and fridges
are destroying the ozone layer, which protects the earth
from the harmful effects of the sun.
The world's average temperature is getting
hotter; this is known as "global warming" and
is caused by releasing gases from burning oil and coal.
