Vigorous campaigns by the government and
anti-smoking groups have raised the public's awareness of
smoking.
"No Smoking" signs can be found
in just about any public place.
Many buildings and offices are completely
smoke-free, meaning smoking is completely forbidden in those
places.
All domestic flights in America are now
non-smoking.
In the early years of the anti-smoking movement,
restaurants used to have a small area reserved for non-smokers,
but now, the tables have turned and most restaurants have
a small area reserved for smokers.
In general, Americans get very annoyed if
somebody near them is smoking when they are eating food.
Polite smokers used to wait until they finished
before lighting up, but now they often have to go outside
or to a separate room to smoke.
Recent studies have shown that passive or
secondary smoking is as dangerous to a non-smoker's health
as it is to a smoker's.
Some companies refuse to employ smokers,
saying that they waste too much time and that it is inconvenient
to provide special smoking areas for them.
Recently, some major American cigarette
companies have admitted that they knew that their products
damaged people's health and, in many cases, were actually
fatal.
They have been sued for billions of dollars
and, with restrictions getting tighter each year, it seems
that they are developing their markets in third world countries
where there is less awareness of the dangers of smoking.
