A Malaysian snake charmer has climbed into
a small glass case with some unpleasant roommates.
Ali Khan is going to spend the next three
weeks in this small space with 6,000 scorpions.
39-year-old Ali says he wants to beat the
world record for living with scorpion, which is currently
held by an Indonesian called Cecep.
Cecep stayed with 4,000 scorpions for 15
days a few years ago.
Ali spoke to reporters as he sat cross-legged
with the poisonous insects crawling all over his face and
body.
"About five years ago, I began dreaming
what it would be like to live with scorpions," he said.
"I can withstand 10 scorpion bites
a day, and I take herbs which increase my tolerance."
During this time Ali won't leave the cage,
not even to go to the bathroom or to wash.
As the scorpions were being put in the cage,
Ali was bitten twice, once on the nose.
What will he do if more than 10 scorpions
bite him in one day?
"I will open the door and run out,"
he says.
"I want to live like everybody else!"
Ali earns his living by performing acts
with snakes.
With his snakes and scorpions he appears
in nightclub acts around Malaysia.
Adults will be charged $1.60 and children
40 cents to see him, and the money will be divided between
him and a hospital charity.
