Trevor Baylis is an inventor and he works
alone in his house in southwest London.
Mr Baylis is best known for his invention
of the clockwork radio.
Realising that many people in remote parts
of Africa did not have access to electricity and that batteries
were relatively expensive, he designed a radio that worked
like an old fashioned watch.
Called the Freeplay Radio, his clockwork
radio can play for an hour after a two-minute winding.
Freeplay Radios are now being made at the
rate of 20,000 a month and Mr Baylis has become a millionaire.
Mr Baylis, who used to be a professional
swimmer and stunt man, said it wasn't easy to get support
for his clockwork radio.
"Nobody was interested in developing
and marketing my radio until I appeared on a television
programme about inventions," he said.
"It's often difficult for inventors
to get businessmen to listen to ideas," he continued.
Now Mr Baylis is developing a clockwork
computer for use in the third world.
Recently, in Africa, he succeeded in getting
a low-powered laptop computer to operate for 13 minutes
by clockwork power alone.
He believes that it is an exciting idea
which could lead to the widespread use of computers in schools
in developing countries all over the world.
