We are all individuals with different tastes,
but we belong to a culture.
And cultures have different ideas about
beauty.
Many white Europeans and Americans sunbathe
to get a tan.
They think that dark skin is healthy-looking
and attractive.
In many Asian and African cultures, however,
people whiten their skin with creams.
Western magazines usually show tall, thin
models.
In India, though, popular movie stars look
a little plump and heavy.
Some cultures, for example in the Middle
East, admire men with mustaches and hairy chests - they
are manly and tough.
In some cultures, people create special
features for beauty.
Women in Zaire, North Africa sharpen their
teeth, Burmese women make their necks very long with rings,
and in Papua New Guinea some tribes tattoo their faces with
many lines.
Everywhere people can find human beauty,
but perhaps not every culture or individual thinks beauty
is the same thing.
