Writing in the Wall Street Journal, an influential
American newspaper, a female lawyer has expressed happiness
that so many American women are buying guns.
Laura Smith says that if feminists are serious
about wanting to get control of their own lives, they should
forget about discussion groups and buy guns.
She says that if every woman in every high-crime
area in America had a gun in her handbag, we would have
a safer, more polite society.
"Let's face it," she argues, "If
you go into a bar, you don't see women waiting to pick a
fight. Women don't start fights at football matches, or
shoot Bambi for pleasure."
What she seems to be saying is that women
make more responsible gun owners than men.
"Most women are smaller and weaker
than men, and have a right to defend themselves," she
says.
"There are a lot of crazy guys out
there, and a lot of women suffer at their hands."
"If a woman wakes up to see a stranger
coming in through her bedroom window and has a pistol under
her pillow and knows how to use it, nobody would blame her
for killing him. And his death would make the world a better,
safer place."
