Last Thursday Mr. William Murphy, a Canadian,
found a wallet on a street in Montreal.
It contained $80, some credit cards and
some lottery tickets.
Mr. Murphy, who is 28 and unemployed, immediately
checked the address in the wallet and posted it back to
its owner, Mr. Jean Paul Dupont.
However, he decided to keep the lottery
tickets.
"I wanted to check them. I thought
I might win $10 or something," he said.
On Sunday he checked the tickets and found
that he had the winning ticket!
It was worth $7 million!
He thought about keeping the ticket and
getting the money for himself.
He sat down and thought about it for two
hours, and then he knew what he had to do.
He took the bus to Mr. Dupont's house and
knocked on the door.
Mr Dupont's son opened the door, but he
didn't speak English very well because the Duponts are French-
Canadian.
Finally his father came to the door.
"Congratulations! You're a millionaire,"
said Mr. Murphy.
However, Mr. Dupont didn't believe his ears
until he was shown the lottery ticket and the newspaper.
"What an honest man you are!"
he said.
"You deserve a reward - at least a
million dollars, I think."
So he rewarded Mr. Murphy's honesty with
a gift of over a million dollars.
