In 1952 two young men in London decided
to rob a store.
Their names were Craig and Bentley.
They were unemployed, delinquent youths
who wanted some excitement in their lives.
Craig was 16 years old and Bentley was 19.
During the robbery a policeman called Sydney
Miles came upon them and tried to stop the robbery.
Craig pulled out a gun and there was a struggle
between Craig and the policeman.
As Sydney Miles was attempting to restrain
Craig and get the gun from him, Bentley shouted, "Let
him have it!".
This resulted in Craig shooting the policeman
dead.
At that time Britain still had the death
penalty for certain kinds of crime, including the murder
of a policeman.
The death penalty was only used, however
if the guilty person was over 18 years of age.
Craig the minor who shot the policeman was
given life imprisonment, but Bentley, who had never touched
the gun, but was over 18, was hanged.
This was because the judge thought Bentley's
cry of "Let him have it!", incited Craig to commit
the murder.
