John Schiffeler's relatives are certain
not to raise any objections if he goes through with plans
to sell their Oakland, California residence, located on
a quiet, verdant hill overlooking San Francisco Bay.
That's because the structure, he is offering
for $250 000 is a mausoleum.
The inhabitants - six family members, including
Schiffeler's parents and a friend died years ago.
Recently people have been known to sell
off precious family heirlooms such as antiques, vintage
jewelry and even war time medals for bravery and sporting
trophies, out of financial desperation and even greed, but
Schiffeler has taken this one step further.
Many people feel that nowadays respect for
family tradition and ancestry has given way to the all important
dollar.
"I am not, what you would say, an offspring
without filial piety," said Schiffeler, who adds he
would rather not part with the family plot.
"I find myself, I am sorry to say in
a rather severe financial situation."
