According to Tokyo Customs, the victims
were all returning from Asian countries.
About ten cases were discovered this year.
In 1992, five members of a group of seven
Japanese tourists were arrested by Australian Customs and
accused of possessing drugs.
While sightseeing in Malaysia on their way
to Australia, the baggage of four of these tourists had
been stolen.
They traveled on to Australia with baggage
that had been prepared by the travel agent - and contained
hidden drugs.
They tried to explain how it happened, but
the customs staff did not believe them and sent them to
jail.
They were released after serving 10 years
but one is still in prison.
This new case highlights the deviousness
of exploiting feelings of trust.
Behind the words we may hear from people
in foreign countries, a trap may be waiting.
In Japan a British bar hostess was abducted
and killed, her body horrifically mutilated by a Japanese
man only a few years ago.
This caused questions and debate over the
safety of hostesses in Japan.
We should always remain careful when visiting
foreign countries.
