Richard Seed, a scientist in the Chicago
area, is ready to start experiments on cloning human beings
to create babies for infertile couples.
Mr. Seed plans to set up a clinic that would
clone babies for infertile parents.
Mr. Seed said; "It is my plan to set
up a Human Clone Clinic in Chicago, and, when it is profitable,
to open other clinics in major American cities and abroad".
However, President Clinton has proposed
banning such research for five years, saying that it was
morally unacceptable and could undermine society's respect
for human life.
Surveys have shown that 90% of Americans
are against human cloning.
However, some fertility experts say that
cloning offers hope and opportunities for medicine.
There are two kinds of attitudes towards
the cloning of humans; one group is strongly opposed to
it on vague moral grounds, and the other group, composed
mainly of scientists, believes that it is perfectly acceptable.
