With no room now left on the fence, couples
are fastening their love tokens on anything that will hold
a padlock, including statues.
The city management firm first tried removing
the padlocks, and then launched an unsuccessful campaign
to discourage the practice.
Even imposing fines on couples who were
caught in the act of clamping padlocks in public.
These fines seemed only to the residents
of Pecs as mean-spirited and petty and no couples were actually
fined as people were reluctant to tell tales on their amorous
neighbors.
Now in a final act of desperation there
are plans to erect a special "lovers gate,
A new intricately designed iron structure
which couples are encouraged to fix their love padlocks
to.
"This would kill the essence of the
padlocking habit, its spontaneity and people's feeling that
they are secretly leaving their mark", said Art Historian
Ferenc Romvary.
This seemingly innocent and harmless act
of love has caused the townsfolk to question their rights
when it comes to public property.
Is it defacement and vandalism or is it
a new tradition of a simple expression of love?
What do you think?
